Corporate micropersons
I was recently reminded of a period in Agora Nomic where the in-game meaning of "person", among other things, was only implicitly defined by vague reference to "legal definitions" and such. Agora does have rules for adjudicating rules disputes, so naturally they were used:
- "Zefram is a pineapple." (Dismissed as irrelevant; nothing in the rules depended on the answer.)
Ah, but you can make some things relevant by creating a situation that depends on them. If Zefram and Goethe agreed to a partnership, including terms for wielding power of attorney, would it count as a corporate person?
- "The Pineapple Partnership is a person." (Allegedly called by the Pineapple Partnership. Allegedly judged true by Goethe, who totally didn't have a conflict of interest.)
Well, not everyone bought that, so to make sure the question was formally raised at least once:
- "The Pineapple Partnership is a person." (Called by me. Judged true by checks notes the Pineapple Partnership.)
Yeah, it took a couple more tries to establish consensus on the topic.
Partnerships were a major part of gameplay for about two years after that; I wrote an in-game thesis around the middle of that time, documenting their history up to that point. Then the rules were eventually changed to explicitly rule them out, after one of my partnerships (allowing any partner to direct its actions unilaterally) committed quite a few rule violations for which no partner could be adequately penalized. Funny how that worked out.
Much more recently (a couple years ago), Agora workshopped its definition of personhood to return to something like this form, though disallowing overlap this time around. The current version of the rule in question includes the following:
Any entity (including a group of entities confederated with the intent of forming a single person under this Rule) that is or ever was able to willingly communicate original ideas is a person. Rules to the contrary notwithstanding, no other entities are persons.
Questions about personhood are to be resolved equitably, with regard for the good-faith of those involved and the customs of honorable play.
The basis of a person is the set of all persons that are (recursively) part of em, in addition to emself. Rules to the contrary notwithstanding, a person CANNOT become Registered [ed: i.e. become a player] if eir basis overlaps with that of any current player.
